Hypertec surpasses rapid expansion targets for Montreal hyperscale data center campus

Fully sold multi-phase 3-year build-out of YUL01 facilities
New capacity pre-sells prior to completion of construction
Ample capacity to support ongoing wholesale colocation growth strategy

Montreal, October 16, 2019 – Hypertec, an end-to-end global provider of wholesale colocation services, technology products and value-added services, announced that it was surpassing its rapid expansion goals for its Montreal YUL01 hyperscale colocation campus due to its superior design technology and strong customer demand.

The two-facility campus once ramped up can supply up to 45MW of critical power load to support a diverse client base of cloud and communication service providers, media and entertainment vendors and studios, public sector agencies, fintech and financial services companies.

Since its inception in 2016, the Montreal West Island campus has undergone eight major growth phases for a total of 13MW of critical power. Two more segments are planned for an additional combined 5MW of critical load by the end of 2019, one of which is already pre-sold.

“We attribute our success to our unique approach to data center design,” said Jonathan Ahdoot, Hypertec Chief Commercial Officer and Colocation Business Unit Leader. “As a leading provider of innovative technology solutions, we are uniquely positioned to translate our understanding of our customers’ hardware and applications into the design and construction of optimized data centers. We are able to provide our customers with the ability to install and rapidly scale any type of hardware regardless of its density, form factor or cooling technology.  We do so with extreme efficiency and thus provide customers with increased flexibility combined with a significantly lower and sustainable price-point.”

Recent YUL01 major milestones:

  • Completed construction of a second campus facility with a large scalable footprint that is
    purpose-built for high density wholesale and hyperscale workloads;
  • Built a new state-of-the-art redundant on-site 120kV high-voltage substation increasing total campus utility capacity to more than 80MW;
  • Delivered the 7th and 8th campus growth phases representing the 1st and 2nd phases within its second campus facility; with its proprietary rapid scaling design, the support of strategic supply chain partners as well as the dedication of its in-house engineering and commissioning team, Hypertec completed the 7th growth phase in less than 60 days.

Montreal’s recent growing reputation as the ‘best location in the world to set up a data centre’ is underscored by Quebec’s cost-efficient clean energy and the recent influx of cloud service providers, visual effects studios, artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups and other technology organizations to the region. Prior to this, Hypertec had already successfully gained more than 10 years of experience in building and operating world-class wholesale data center facilities.

Hypertec’s proprietary, resilient and efficient power and cooling data center infrastructure technologies, the industry’s fastest ‘design to build’ delivery of new capacity and lower sustainable price-points will provide the basis for a tailor-made superior product offering for the rapidly expanding and sophisticated hyperscale and wholesale customers both in Quebec and beyond.

Hypertec’s strong performance and continuing positive growth outlook have enabled the company to raise substantial financing to further develop YUL01 and open new colocation data centers across Quebec to meet anticipated customer demand.
